Oggi il Past Continuous, e come al solito, c’è un brano da ascoltare contenente tanti esempi.

E’ meglio ascoltare la registrazione almeno una volta (o anche più volte), prima di leggere la trascrizione che troverai qui sotto.

Non ti preoccupare delle parole che non conosci, continua ad ascoltare anche se all’inizio capisci poco (o nulla) del testo. Con un po’ di pratica, migliorerai!

6. Past Continuous – A phone was ringing

Monday morning, and the clock on our office wall was ticking away the first minutes of what would probably be a boring week.

The office was bright and warm. Computer screens were humming and a phone was ringing, but no one was hurrying to pick it up.

Instead, a group of us were standing by the coffee machine, chatting about our weekends.

The snack machine was refusing to give change again, though the waste paper bin was already filling up with sticky coffee cups and snack wrappers.

Outside it was raining heavily, but looking down from our third floor window, you could still see the usual group of smokers, who were puffing away near the main entrance to the building.

Our supervisor was the only one sitting at her desk, though she wasn’t working yet either. She was using the contents of her large handbag, which were spilling onto her computer keyboard, to repair her make-up, and arrange her damp hair.

Were we waiting for an invisible signal, before we could start work? Perhaps we were hoping the clouds would part, and the sun would shine?

Or maybe we were just waiting for our supervisor to finish her hair, or for someone to answer the still-ringing phone.
