Chapter 1
Giacomo is a 30 year old electrician. He works at the maintenance depot of a small town in Northern Italy. When his son, Tommaso, asks “Papa, what work do you do?” he replies, “I repair the lamps and lights of the town.”
Since he was a boy, Giacomo has been interested in the stars and planets and has bought many books on the subject. But when he left school he went straight into a job as an electrician and forgot his dream of becoming an astronomer.
Then he met Lisa and after only six months they were married. So now they are a family of three: Giacomo, Lisa and little Tommaso.
Tommaso is 6 years old and is in the first year of elementary school. He’s a bright child, full of curiosity, and every day comes home with a lot of questions. He loves music and animals, especially his dog, Red.
Today is Saturday and after school Tommaso goes out to play with Red in the garden. When he hears Lisa call
“Lunch is ready, time to stop playing now and come in”
he runs in and sits at the table. After they’ve eaten, Tommaso tells his parents:
“Today the teacher told us about the stars and the planets. It was really interesting!”
To Giacomo this is like a dream: his son, talking about the stars!
“Listen, Tommaso,” he says, “how would you like to go to a place full of stars?”
“Can we? Really?” asks Tommaso. “When?”
Giacomo looks at Lisa and smiles.
“Why not today? This evening the two of us will go to the astronomical observatory. It’s a wonderful place!”
