Chapter 1 – The Historic City of York
My name is Angela. I’m 25 years old, and I live on my own in a town in the north of England.
I work as an engineer, and I like my job very much. But I want to live in York, with my boyfriend, David. We have to travel twenty miles every time we want to be together. York is a beautiful historic city, with many old buildings and narrow streets. It’s much nicer than my own town, which is modern, and not at all interesting.
My boyfriend, David, is a dentist. He’s happy to work in the centre of this small city. He can go shopping in his lunch hour, or go for a walk and look at the ducks on the river. He doesn’t need a car, unless he wants to drive out of York into the countryside.
There are several museums in York, and a large cathedral. Tourists come there from all over the world to walk along the city walls, or to visit the famous railway museum, or to go in a boat on the river. In the spring, the whole city is bright with flowers. The spring is my favourite season.
Today, at eleven o’clock, I have an interview with a company at a business park on the outskirts of the city. The new job sounds very interesting, and the pay is more than I get now, so I really want this job!
