Chapter 5
The next evening Donato begins his investigation. He sees immediately that there is something strange.
“I don’t believe in magic,” he says to himself, “But it’s true: the town does seem different…”
He comes into via Dante and looks up at the sky. Stars…. There are so many stars! He doesn’t usually see many stars in town. The town seems more beautiful, too.
Donato checks the street lights; they all seem to be working. But wait, there is something different: all the lights are dimmer, less bright than usual.
And the façade of the bank is darker; someone has altered the direction of the lights so that they point downwards.
“There’s something going on here,” he mutters, “Why all this darkness? Perhaps somebody is planning to rob the bank? But who? And the traffic incidents? Maybe it’s all a criminal plot, it could be a saboteur…”
A woman passing at that moment overhears these last words. And as soon as she gets home she phones a friend. In no time at all the news gets around and everyone is talking about this “saboteur”.
In the bar the next morning Giacomo reads the news in the local paper: ‘A criminal plot in our town. Mayor concerned.’
“Oh, no!” thinks Giacomo, anxiously “What now?”
He’s afraid. If the police discover the truth. there is a risk he’ll go to prison and won’t see Tommaso for a long time.
“Maybe if I put everything back as it was before…..”
He rushes out and heads for the depot.
