Chapter 3 – An Accident
A man on a red bicycle has collided with the woman. He shouts at her: ‘You should be more careful, and look where you’re going.’
The woman is angry. ‘I was walking on the pavement. You should only ride your bicycle on the road. It’s your fault.’
The man knows that he is in the wrong, and he says that he’s sorry; but he doesn’t wait to help her. He gets on his bicycle and rides away.
I go to help the woman. She stands up without much difficulty, but there’s a large cut on her leg. I have a clean handkerchief, and I wrap it round her leg. Her clothes are dirty, and so are mine. We look at one another, and laugh.
‘I hope you’re not going somewhere important,’ she says. ‘You look as bad as I do!’
‘It doesn’t matter,’ I say, although it does. I look at my dirty clothes, and think ‘How can I go to the interview now?’ I’m already late.
Fortunately, the woman knows the way to the place I am looking for. ‘It’s not far,’ she says. ‘Look! Can you see the corner of a yellow building? That’s where you want to be.’
