Chapter 8 – The Message
By now, not only the customers but also the staff and the manager of the supermarket know Claudio well.
The manager speaks sternly to Claudio, “Now this is enough! This is the last time I want to see you in this store!”
“But it’s not my fault!” protests the young architect, trying to justify himself.
“That doesn’t matter,” shouts the manager, furious, “every time you come here you create havoc!”
“But the lady….”
“You only come here to molest my customers. If it doesn’t stop, I shall call the police!”
And with the fat lady crying and still shouting “My love! My love! Why?” Claudio is taken, like a prisoner, to the manager’s office where an evil-looking store detective stands guard at the door.
Sad and resigned, Claudio again sees Elisa leave the store without having been able to speak to her.
After ten minutes of protests and justifications, the store detective accompanies him to the exit.
Without much hope Claudio looks around in front of the shop, but of course there is no sign of Elisa.
He tries the supermarket car park, but Elisa isn’t there either.
She’s gone.
Claudio is sure now that his romantic but unlucky quest is over. It was the adventure of a man completely ignored by the woman of his dreams!
As he turns to go home, another elderly woman hurries towards him.
“A beautiful young woman left this for you!” she says, smiling at Claudio and handing him a piece of paper.
He takes the note and, as he reads it, his eyes light up.
“I see that some things never change! Sunday, 15.30, in the bar opposite the cinema. I’ll have a coffee with you… if you promise not to spill it! Elisa.”
